The proper way to resign from a job
By Nicholas Cockayne
For almost everyone, at one time or another in their career, there comes a point when they resign from their job for various reasons. This is never an easy or enjoyable time but if you follow the four easy steps in this guide then you will learn how to resign with the minimum of hassle. Knowing how to resign is an important aspect of employment and your future career might count on it! Step 1. Consult your contract. All permanent employees sign a contract at the start of their employment. In this document is a clause stating the amount of notice that must be given when resigning. What this amounts to is the length of time you are required to give between handing in your letter of resignation and the day you walk out of the job. Failure to complete this period of notice could result in loss of outstanding paid holiday or the employer refusing to provide a reference. Knowing your period of notice and fulfilling it is one of the most important aspects of knowing how to resign. Step 2. Handing in your letter of notice. Formal notice of resignation is made by handing in your letter of resignation. This may be just a brief document but it must include important details. It should include the date of handing it in, the period of notice and last effective working day, reasons for leaving and a signature. It should be typed, formally written and cordial; at least if you wish to leave on good terms. Step 3. Complete the period of notice Your letter of resignation is handed in and now you just have to fulfill your period of notice. This time is best used to wrap up any outstanding business at the company and to try and make sure all your tax and employment documents are in order. Although you are leaving try and stay on cordial terms with colleagues and bosses. Remember you may be leaving but if going on to other employment you will want a reference. It's not a good idea to tell people exactly what you think of them if you want them to say positive things about you to prospective employers in the future. Step 4. Leaving Well, it's time to leave. Ensure you collect all your personal belongings and leave a stamped self addressed envelope if you want your last paycheck sent on to you. Keep the contact details of your boss and company just in case you ever need to contact them with regards to tax or employment records. It's time to leave the past behind and move on to pastures new and a bright future. Well done on successfully resigning.
